My story continued

A young girl around seven years old wearing a cherry red dress and blonde pigtails came skipping up to her booth, her chin barely reaching the counter.

“Hey lady!” The voice squeaked, as high pitched as the tilt a whirl’s annoying rendition of “It’s a Small World.” “Can you really tell the future?

           

 

 

            Lavender cleared her throat and in not a very convincing Russian accent drawled, “Yes my dear, I can tell you your future, or anything you want for just two tickets.” The little girl handed over two blue “admit one” tickets that were tainted with a sticky cotton candy residue.

            “Give me your hand.” The little girl placed her hand over the counter as she nervously chewed her pigtail.

            “What the hell?” Lavender thought to herself. The coolness of the child’s hand seemed to melt her own spider veined one. Her thoughts faded out one by one, as images formed in her mind. The carnival was gone, even the nicotine addiction had ceased to claw at her subconscious. The images were appearing and disappearing rapidly. A couple walking. A piano. A church. An empty liquor bottle. A wheelchair. Lavender yanked her hand away. She frowned as the blinking lights and the girl’s yellow pigtails bobbing in front of her came back into focus. She bent over the counter and whispered in her customer’s ear….

Lavenders by Moonlight

The harsh blinking of the carnival lights had stopped hurting Miss Lavender’s eyes over an hour ago. But the combination of the light bulbs blinking in time with the tinny music and the salty sweet smell of caramel popcorn still gave her a dull headache. It was supposed to be an easy summer job, a way to support herself between careers. But the damn carnival paid her a hell of a lot better than a career in piano performance did. She began to wish she were allowed to have a cigarette. “Stupid rule,” she thought, beginning to feel the nagging crave for nicotine, “not supposed to smoke around the darling children.”

            Miss Lavender adjusted her turban, a white sheet she had just picked up from the cleaners. The sign in front of the booth where she sat bragged about the “Mystical Miss Lavender: Fortune Teller and Palm Reader Extraordinaire” in bold purple and gold lettering. “Miss Lavender” she snorted, “the name sounds like something out of a fairy tale….I want my happy ending!” she thought. “This is more like hell.” The sweltering heat agreed with her statement, and Lavender half expected the sky to burst into flames.  

21st Century Awesomeness-Hooray for Green Day!

I recently bought the new Green Day album on Itunes. I wish I could've gotten the album but I hate Best Buy, and alas Tower Records went out of business. Anyway, I thought it was pretty top-notch, even though the singles suck. Honestly the two singles-Know Your Enemy and Restless Heart Syndrome aren't that great. "Enemy" is repetitive to the point of becoming broken-record status and "BHS" is just not memorable. Do not be intimidated by the length of the album- 22 songs...wow! It loosely follows the idea of a concept album-with motifs such as love, religion, politics and non conformity. This seems to be nothing new for Green Day especially since the, in my opinion pretty good to mediocre album American Idiot. I especially enjoyed the songs 21st century breakdown, before the lobotomy, last night on earth, east jesus nowhere and horseshoes and handgrenades.

For Green Day this is a definite step up. I'm not the biggest Green Day know it all, but when was the last time Green Day had a love ballad like Last Night on Earth? The instrumentals go beyond the normal simple punk riffs that Green Day steers toward, and is more complex. The only complaint I have is the lyrics. It's the same complaint I have with Pink Floyd. The anti-establishment lyrics are a bit too obvious. However the lyrics are much more tolerable than "Idiot's" Give Me Novocain. I honestly can't stop listening to this album. I really wish I had tickets for the tour.

My dog plays videogames

This is an old picture of my dog Pebbles staring at our Gamecube controller(don't be hatin' on Gamecube :P). She's an 11 year old Beagle and Jack Russel mix....we think. She may have some Fox Hound in her. She still thinks she's a puppy because she's pretty active. She loves people, and is very intelligent-she knows every family member's name and other English words. 

I'm an English major and I liked Twilight

Ok Before I get started, let me clarify. I liked Twilight because I saw it as entertainment, as a "I wonder what's going to happen next" type of thing, similar to Stephen King novels and the DaVinci Code. I think to appreciate the series you have to be into vampires, and understand that Twilight fans, and I'm sure Stephanie Meyer herself are not equating the books to...say 1984 or Heart of Darkness. Some things I thought the books excelled at and could improve upon:

1) I loved the character of Jacob, and the members of the Cullen family but I thought all of the other characters were either one or two dimensional. Jacob's character and the Cullens-minus Edward were all very interesting to read about. They had faults, troubles and triumphs. But, I honestly thought that Bella and Edward were great for each other only because they were so boring! I also thought the whole "sparkling vampire" thing was quite silly. Bella seemed too...ordinary, and I honestly don't think I could describe her character at all. She only stood out because her high school friends were so incredibly dull, and I think most fans skipped over the parts that took place in her high school.

2)The drama was great but the descriptive language....not so much. Ok we all know that Edward and Bella's kisses and fights were fun to read about, as well as the love triangle. I thought the love triangle with Jacob was very intense and well developed. Truth be told, I always rooted for Jacob. But honestly, I could never picture any character or situation like I could in Harry Potter. The descriptions were bland, and the vocabulary level was much to be desired, even considering that it's a YA book. But again, it was easy to look over the language because of the intense action/love scenes.

 Anyway, don't avoid Twilight because of the ultra-hype and fangirls. All I'm saying is, give vampires a chance.

Inside

 

He crept into my dreams

With the whisper of a dripping faucet

Overflowing the bathtub

And drenching my unconscious state.

The dream pictures become blurred-

And I do not see him

I never do-

He is Neither the protagonist

Nor the antagonist

Only a figure in the corner-

swallowed up in sepia tones

The credits never show his name

And at the end of the night I awake with applause ringing in my ears

“I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy”

The familiar tune plays in my head.

On the Ninth Thursday,

I am at the train station.

I grab my suitcases-

And race towards nothing.

My reflection is trapped in the cold doors, but they are all the same.

I notice Him at the end of the platform

Clutching a bag I must have forgotten

The train pulls out of the station

Hands shaking, he holds up a sign written in purple crayon

There's 25 hours in a day up here in my Castle in the Air

A lot of these are Kids/YA books because I'm a kid at heart like that

1) The Neverending Story-THe greatest fantasy novel I have read. It's so much better than the movie(although I do love the movie) which pretty much ends in the middle of the novel. THe hardcover edition is also written in red and green ink, which is pretty awesome.
2)Howl's Castle/Castle in the Air-pretty much companion books to one another. These are intelligent, funny fantasy books disguised as children's lit. They subtly poke fun at fairy tales and the characters are always interesting and unusual.
3)The Wyrd Museum Series-I picked these books up at a bookstore in Boston one time and fell in love. NO ONE has heard of them-though I don't know why. It mixes the mythological "Three Fates" Story with historical fiction, horror, fantasy and a pretty sweet museum. It's like Night at the Museum's dark and sinister, slightly insane, older sister.
4)Wicked- Sigh. Everyone loves the musical, but most can't get through the book. True it's very weird and even I will admit that the plot of the musical is a bit better-but the characters are lively and the story is so much darker. 

5) Twilight-Just kidding.
6) Cirque Du Freak- Ok, it's vampire lit. But for the most part there's no romancing. It's almost entirely plot driven and considered YA lit-but the plot is quite good. I read all 13 of the books and loved them. Now I think that sadly I may be too old/too much of an english major to truly appreciate them again.
7) Abarat- I love love love this series! Right now it's only been two books. It is not only a unique and interesting fantasy/adventure novel about a archipelago of islands that represent each hour of the day situated right outside the town of Chickentown, Minnesota but the author is a talented artist as well. Every chapter has full color paintings of the characters and places in Abarat.

I didn't burn the house down!!!

This is the meal I made Saturday. I've never cooked before, and after many bouts of screaming and generally panicking, I got the hang of it. It's veal sauteed in a wine sauce with peppers onions and mushrooms; smashed potatoes on the side. Comment if you want the recipe!

First Blog post...ever

Hi! My name is Angelina Jolie. Not that Angelina Jolie, but I've been told that I resemble her. Anyway, I'm new to blogging and I guess I will say a bit about myself? I was homeschooled my entire life, and I've been to 37 countries. Besides traveling a lot, I primarily lived in Juneau , Alaska. It's actually not as cold there as you may think. Some blame global warming, but I blame the penguins.

Ok, that would be pretty cool(translation if you are from New England: "wicked") if that was my life. But it's not. I'm a college girl from the suburbs. Besides Quebec, Montreal and the showcase at Epcot, I've never been to a foreign country. I also went through public schooling, as so many of us do, and honestly, I like penguins.  Also I just looked it up: penguins are from Antarctica, not Alaska. Polar Bears are from Alaska. I always mix that up. But you know, now that I'm thinking about it, it makes sense. 

But, I digress. I am also an aspiring writer/English major extraordinare.  I often think that the Avenue Q song "What do you do with a BA in English?" was made for me.  I'm a huge Yankees fan and I just learned that I might be somewhat skilled in cooking...which is probably a good thing, being 100% Italian at all.
